Rework in Progress part 2

Going over the editing is finally over!  Finally!
Now the Rework [aka rewriting just about everything] can begin.

Woo!

The new version of the story, can't wait to get it completed.

I put up additional pages on the story's blog section.  The art and stuff has been given it's own page so you no longer have to go to tumblr and stuff.  Check it here.

Rework in Progress

Well, the rework has been in progress for a bit.  Over the past few weeks on the few days time zones can sync, I've been wrangling the overall story with Suizo in order to get some clarity in this manuscript.

An update for Ernest Demon

A while ago I might have said, "Oh yes we're finally done!" what I meant was with a climatic arc.  Technically you could leave the story there, but it'd be kind of a mean thing to do.  If it was a manga volume thing then it'd be a cliffhanger, "Wtf is going to happen next" ending after the 21st chapter.

I have been working on the 22nd, along with a lot of concerns of content that is to come well after that chapter.  The over all editing and ironing of the earlier chapters of this experiment has been put on hold and only recently got picked up again.  Art was slowed, and the chapter put on hold till decisions were made.

None of which was updated, and constant updates seem to be trendy thing these days... or well, necessary to stay relevant.  Haha ^^;

Anyways, the latest chapter has been worked on.  I don't like to give away too much so for those readers that have somehow stumbled upon this that enjoy ED, then I'll be happy to say, please look forward to the next chapter and the few to follow.

There's going to be a monster brawl.

It costs a heart.

It flickers, and its light dances in that dark night.  It fights off the beasts, yet draws them near.  It whispers songs into your deaf ears.  An illusion of sight that burns with warmth; comforting, crackling, converse-as in conversation, you'll have one, three, many more by its side.  It'll last throughout time, yet its fuel burns finite.

Perhaps you imagine that I am talking of a campfire.  A flame that wards off danger, yet welcomes strangers.  But no, I speak of writing.

Specifically, phrases and thoughts that speak of its 'value'.

I have often heard the line, "words are cheap" taken out of context and then used to determine value of words in general.  I find that revolting, personally, but my point of view comes from the angle of context.  If anyone can recall the phrase "words are cheap" is usually spoken near or alongside or even after something that sounds like "actions are louder than words" or "a picture is 1000 words".  Which is fine, and truthful.  Striking a gong is going to be louder than me saying that I strike a gong.  Likewise the foundation of comprehension when one looks at a single image can often conjure up a dictionary of words by description and association.

But that isn't what I find troubling.

What I find troubling is that these phrases are often used to devalue written work, or to describe one's stance on apples and oranges.

Over the puzzling years I've spent going up and down the slides of life, I've found myself at the framed gates of other minds.  Those that I wish to collaborate with, or those that I admire (as in their works, I hardly know them as persons).  Sometimes (not all the times) I come across a gated community whose perception of reality is to my Van Gogh to their Picasso.  We speak in completely different languages (of art) which is to be expected of our evolutionary paths; yet the system of values truly doesn't branch both ways.  Those gates were closed to the value of writing, which was apparent beyond just their phrases on the matter.  They threw around words with hardly a thought.  Their concepts left mute to rot without a sentence, nary a word or phrase that could gild their picture frames.  Nay, the space for words were often left barren.  A desert for speech with a mute presentation.  "Let it speak for itself!"  And how!  Could we get a word or two to go with this piece?  Perhaps something other than the jingle of a sponsor that tries to sell us on the secret of a mother that the IRS will really hate?

Here, let me shoot down this flying sheep.  Cut away the wool, let's get to the meat.

On my mind has been the relative value of the written word.  Try to pitch the writing craft and it seems that one hits a rebounding wall, a barrier that doesn't accept your currency.

You go around in our entertainment rich world and you'll probably hear, "I don't have time to read" this, that, a book, what have you.  Try to hand off a book for free, a manuscript, a gem in the making and you'll likely get a healthy plate of rejection.  It's like the plague, or perhaps raw meat.

Don't have time to read... or for those fellow writers who are struggling they might decree that they don't have time to write!  And yet I am sure that you are doing it at every moment! The reading! The writing!

It may not be a book, but it's probably something on your computer, phone, etc.

The 'why' of not having enough time isn't what I'm going to cover at the moment.  Let's continue the conversation of value.

So no one wants the thing for free.  You pass it around and get blocked or ignored.  Then you get these quips back, spun like gold by their owners yet you know that these words they say are hollow.  Beyond the statement of 'no time', there is often the rather knife wound phrases like, "It's not worth anything" or "anyone could do that" or "It's not the movie, game, web app" and so on.  Suddenly it's not enough to just say they aren't in the mood for in depth reading, thinking and topic discussion; now they have to convince themselves (and you) that such levels of comprehension has no value.

Perhaps a disturbing trend is when the apples and oranges have their mailboxes exchanged.  Go to an animator friend and you'll likely hear a similar tale of woe.  Oh sure they can try and force your eyes on their work - make you look at their magic of making things come to life - but the speed of demonstration does not stop the endless peril of anyone who works in creative art; even here, it is often devalued.  No industry is sacred, just check their checkbooks or hear their grumbling.  I'm not going to paint a grotesque picture that hyper-boles the truth, but these many words have been strung together to point out that they are often not paid much for their worth.  Animation, games, even film.  Consumers often see the numbers of those that reached success, "Millions of dollars in sales!" and then they distress.  I'm not sure if it is the green eyes of envy, but I can say with a glum face that the consumer rarely sounds happy.  At least, I will add, those with the loudest voices amongst the crowd.

Value in a sense isn't limited to cash, though in some ways it can speak in a more universal illusion.  When I ponder on this topic, the defining matter of value goes much deeper.  Entertainment in general is often not valued as highly as another fruit.  I dare say repeat what I've heard, that some decree they can live life without entertainment or that it should be free!  Free!  The most expensive of words!  Free!  That which bleeds and burns.  Free.  Taken for granted after being drained of all its worth.  Never coveted, quickly forgotten and buried in the woods.

Confused?  Do you think I am mistaken?  That free is wondrous and needs no declaration?

Sorry, we stand on separate fords.  I mean the sides of rivers, not cars named after a horse. Let me just rephrase that.  We stand on separate sides of the river of values.

If one experiences that which they had little need to invest into, they might become poisoned with the idea that other experiences should likely require so little investment.  Criticism of this nature turns one into a blithering idiot.  I say that in the most zombie apocalyptic way.  Nary a day goes by that the blade of rationality doth not turn in the spine of its latest acquisitions; like a key to wind a robot that will mine endlessly without thought.  Since I've taken you for a spell this long I suppose I should at least glance into the mirror with you to try and allow the cogs of the mind to crank.

Are you the kind of person who likes a steak or a potato chip?

Do you find yourself defending with strength, that which was most expensive or that which was a cheap fake?

Do your flavors in life color a picture which is filled with a variety of texture?  Or do you prefer it all black, flat, and desire none of that?

I am not saying that things given out as gifts, or that are given out for free have no value; contrary, I say that they often can have more value than that which has a price dictated in monetary value.  What I am saying (if you can piece the bits) is that my grief comes when one does not appreciate the gem they get.  Lack of appraisal is a concern, and is part of an ignorant machine which I see that ever turns.  Station, reasons, and positions aside, when one says that words (or any entertainment quite frankly) has no value, my eyes go dead.  I feel a glaze go over my head.  A protective balm that tries to cover the fragile spirit these words attempt to sunder.

Take for instance a pyrite coin flung your way, "This has no value." Followed by, "If only it was better."  An example case is the perception that by partaking in video games one might decree that there is no value in the story; yet what do you often hear?  "I wish it had a better plot."  That "if only the writing were better" then it'd be a top sell. Then somewhere in that conversation you hear the phrase that this apple is better than that orange, but if only it had that citrus tang.

Truly the contradictions never cease to amaze me...
This kind of coagulation of thoughts and experiences has turned into a nightmare pudding that sloths through my head.  A monstrous entity of double standards which I wish to slay with my pen.

Have you figured it out yet?  The kernel of light, a nugget of gold hidden in this treasure chest that I write?  Rhymes and spice aside I think that this meat has been sizzling long enough.

What I've wanted to say, express and put into so much word, is that I sense a trend against the written word.  Which is odd to say the least, considering how pervasive written speech, how foundational it really is.

You enjoy a Tv show?  It wouldn't happen without good writing.
You feel that movie was flat? Better writing could have fixed that. (Acting, I can't help you with.)
Does this game bore you or excite you? Writing is often to blame, though delivery is more likely the culprit you should hang.
A song that reaches your soul probably had lyrics to tickle your ego.

A lot of work goes into writing.  The best of us can be skilled and quick to deliver.  That skill did not come without cost.  In fact, the best writing often costs a heart.

You see, in order to convey that human connection and bridge the gap across our mental fences, the writer has to first bleed.  We get dirty in the world and see with eyes that recognize the past we wear on our sleeves.  We try to lasso a future where we can all breathe.  We're crafting experiences from the building blocks that broke us, made us, delivered us.  We cut our teeth, skin and bones against the world to bring back the runes that will build a new world.

It cost an eye to see.
It cost an ear to hear.

It cost us to touch, taste, and smell fear.

It cost us a heart, wrenched out by love and loss.

It brought us memories to entrust, to you.

Art.  Written or not.  Costs a heart.

Something human, and of value.

A Tremendous Journey

The Ernest Demon project has come a long way.  The last four chapter's drafts are done and will go through the editing phase to become post drafts.  After the post drafts are up, over all editing and revision will occur as all the chapters are combed through for edits and shifts to ensure that the intended images, theme, and more are in alignment.

And when that's done?  Perhaps some of the other stuff I have planned for Volume 1 can be worked on.  Here's hoping.

Wow... it's been quite some time hasn't it?

2013.

I started thinking of this story in particular back in 2010.

It's been a long 3 years... I was still in the middle of trying to finish a college degree, going through all kinds of situations in life... I sacrificed a lot... made friends... lived and escaped death plenty of times.  It's kind of hard to take in...  The journey isn't over yet, but looking back, it definitely has left it's mark on me.

Soon it will be 2014.

I'd like to thank anyone who has spent the time reading these posted drafts for the project.  And for anyone who might see this message in the future, thank you for spending your precious time with me.

I intend to write at length about this project, maybe even do a video about the experience.

But that is later.  For now, I will enjoy the view I see from the long trail I've crossed.  Mountains of challenges left behind, new ones yet to overcome.

I've learned a lot.  I relearned things I thought I knew.

And I hope to share all of that with you.

For those reading now, please wait just a little bit longer.  The last bones will be fleshed into proper drafts and then posted up as soon as I can finish them.

Thank you again for traveling with me.  I hope you'll enjoy the fruits to come at the end of this first of many journeys to come.

Merry Christmas.
Happy New Year.
Happy Solstice and Winter Cheer, may you have a great New Year!

A process nearly completed.

Tests are done.  No more college.  It's all done.  Degree get.  That's a rather big deal since it means that there are many hours now available for me to pursue whatever it is I'm going to pursue.  The past few weeks have been spent indulging in various things that I had to put off until now.  I'll be hitting the iron keys soon enough to produce the last chapters for this first volume project.

Chapters 16 and 17 were something of a climax treat for anyone who read through the drafts until now.  The next chapter(s) will try to sustain some of that action high or at least replace it with suspense.  Core elements for the volume wrapping up will be written and then we'll see where to go from there...

I know I've been neglecting stream lining a lot of things, so I'll have to tackle that as well.

Overall I'm excited to have gotten this far in the marathon of life.

Here's a metaphorical glass raised in cheer.

You know I'm good for it.

It's been a few energetic months since the last Ernest Demon chapter update... half a chapter was split off and just needed some editing right?

It still does.  I rewrote a majority of that half and it still needs to be finished.

In the mean time I've been rather busy.  Lots of networking, lots of art discussion and so on and so forth.  I haven't gotten it all up, but if you want to see some of the progress you can head over to my tumblr account here:

http://talesofink.tumblr.com/

I've also been busy with studying and trying to get this whole higher-education thing finished.

It's been busy, but it's been good busy.  It's the kind of thing I've always wanted to do and getting closer to seeing things completed - completes me.

As a heads up notification to any reader who does find this message, when the Ernest Demon Project's first volume comes to a close, there will probably be a lot of shifting around.  The online drafts posted up might stay, but the finished product will be put in a desirable package separate from the blog's delivery system.

We're not really sure yet where the home is going to be... but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.  Until then, I got studies to do and the chapter to finish editing.

Till next post.

One chapter split into two

The latest in the Ernest Demon Project has become a rather massive chapter... The plan is to split it into two chapters which will likely be released at the same time after some minor edits and a title check.

Looking back on this project I'm glad to have been able to put it up as a form of motivation.  Everything kind of back tracks to this.  It has been an insight into completing a story and seeing it not only to its end, but also putting it on the path of becoming something more.  Cheerful thoughts aside, there is a lot of work coming up.

After these chapters the first volume will truly have reached a finishing point, and the over all arc of the project will enter its next phase.  If you've followed the series or are coming across this post, the first volume puts down a lot of base concepts which will be the foundation of what is to come.  Sounds simple, but it's all about the execution.  In order to keep everything consistent, a lot of the chapters (especially the earlier ones) will have to be rewritten.  Not only to clean up some paragraphs, but also to make the formatting consistent.

This project has always been envisioned as being different in form to most of the other literature out there.  After going over some of the earlier sections I can guess that most readers will likely have differing views to what I intended for the setting...  To that end, there will likely be further additions to the earlier chapters to make the difference easier to deal with for readers.

The first of many parts of the project is not yet over, in fact, it has only begun.

Volume 1.

I hope that you'll enjoy it once it's completed.

Back Door progress.

There's a lot that goes on when it comes to pumping out another chapter or more.  The reason why I post up these 'chapters' is not only motivation, but also to playtest the chapters which are technically still drafts.  There's always another edit to be checked and another area that could be re-written.  So much to balance and with a small team and never enough time, it can seem like the next chapter will take forever to put up.

Technology and timing can also lead to an undermining of updates... especially when team members are unable to communicate or when life gets in the way.

Still working on the next chapter and checking through parts that need to be edited.  I often say "Technically it's not done yet."  And I get frustrated when I say it, but it's true.  I put up drafts here for anyone to see for free.  One day the first volume will be wrapped up in a nice package and will be greater than these drafts ever were by themselves.

In order to achieve that goal, I have to do a lot of coordination... People to talk to, obstacles to overcome and direction given.  I would like for things to speed up.  I'd like to hammer out these chapters consistently.

I'm working on it.

-

Edit:
Latest chapter is up finally.  Hope to finish this sandbox arc soon.

http://ernestdemon.blogspot.com/2013/02/ernest-demon-chapter-15-spring-cleaning.html#more

When you hear an author or other developer say, "I really didn't plan on this part taking so long."  I can finally say that I understand that.  I always thought of the sandbox arc to have been quite short... I never imagined when I first started that the amount of detail between point A and point B would be such a page consumer.

I figure that if it were animated or drawn out, it would possibly go by real fast.  After all in a picture you can put in a lot of details which takes half a page to describe.  In other cases though, getting the flow of a series of pictures or an animation right, can be just as troubling.

Well, we got about one more chapter left (I think) of the Sandbox arc.  I think.  I hope.  I want to get out of this desert.

By the way, if you have five hours for some epic music in the background:

Project's Progress

Looking back it's rather amazing how far you get when you actually commit to putting things up.  I got bogged down in edit checking and r/l work - and the chapter edits still haven't gone up as much talk/with action has to be done - but the next chapter [13] is finally up!

It's still hard to tell how many chapters are left in the first volume.  As mentioned before, there is a lot of juggling when other mediums are to be involved in the process.  Needless to say it feels good to finally get to this action packed chapter.

Now for the even more action packed chapter to come.

Ch 11 finally re-edited. More to come.

Hmm... They say that the longer it takes to complete a project the more likely it won't get done.  Thankfully I finally sat down and told myself to do it so now we have a fully edited version of chapter 11~!

http://ernestdemon.blogspot.com/2012/01/chapter-11-cavernous-caverns.html

Whew.  Still feels good when it gets done, and that's what I wanna feel!

One can look up article after article about efficiency in work schedules etc.. but really, often it's best to kind of sit down and do the work.  Of course one must wonder whether or not it's valuable to spend time banging one's head against a wall or just to take a break.  That's the real issue at the core of these kinds of problems.  It's no good to work ineffectively.  But it's also no good to plan and never do anything!

Anyways.  As the project rolls along, other stories get advanced in the background.  I even came up with a way to physically play a fictional game I created for story depth.  If anyone reading this will ever remember, you'll find yourself feeling good I suppose if you catch the game being discussed in later works?  I dunno.

Maybe one day I'll have a standard rule set typed up and people can determine amongst themselves how much fun it is to play.

Till then, more stories, more studies and more fiction to write.  The project continues~

Things moving along at their own pace.

Another bit of an update?  I suppose that is to be the case.
Though the most recent chapter has been up for a while, it still actually has a few errors that need to be corrected.  I'm uh... I'm on it!

Anyways >__>;
Been on the steady road of moving things along.  This year, illustrations are in the plans for Ernest Demon.  A bit of a spoiler, but volume 1 is coming to a close and with it, the first stage of this experiment.  I'm recording it here for the sake of such info being on the internets.

The project has come a long way.  This is a heads up to say that after a certain amount of time, volume 1 will be gathered up, clean edited and combined into a product.  We're still working on a concept for a web-base.  We're not completely sure about using Blogger vs Wordpress.  We've been looking into things like tumblr, but still haven't decided on that one either.  *sigh*  A lot of considerations, but the preliminary stuff is just that.  Bigger plans, bigger things to do.

The next chapter of Ernest Demon will be on bone development shortly.  For those who actually come by this page for updates, stay tuned.  LoL... hopefully with a feeder.  Don't want you to miss anything in r/l.

Text on Text off.

Finally the latest chapter of Ernest Demon is up and running.  There's been some slowage due to lots of things which I won't bother you with, but the chapter is up.  A surprise is coming next chapter and hopefully this arc and the volume will soon be done.

Woo~

A tomoto is not a potato

Okay so it's not a new chapter, but it's definitely over due.  The Story and Characters page for Ernest Demon is updated.  So now there's more to read.  It's funny how that's the page that gets more views.  Hopefully it has more substance now to please the avidly curious.

Not an End, but a New Beginning.

It always amazes me how quickly a computer can snowball.  Now that the machine is getting closer to being fully operational once more, I look forward to wrapping up the latest chapter of Ernest Demon.

Back to the Keys.

Best at Night.

So it would seem...  Another draft this time for the sandbox arc is complete.  Ernest Demon is progressing at it's usual pace.

I'm sure at some point there will be better integration... and hopefully in the future any free-content that might be made on some form of schedule can be done ahead of time and then released automatically...

But that's far ahead.  Next segment should be done soon as the bones are finished.

More to come.  More to come.

Another late night. It's what we do.

So I should've been in bed hours ago.  Ah well.

Progress has been a bit slow on the latest chapter.  You know how when an artist gets distracted and spends several hours or days just drawing a random thing?  Well writers can get like that too.

Messing around with web tools, studying and dealing with the challenges of life ...  It's a busy life.

Work on the next chapter is progressing a bit slowly.  But a lot of research for other projects have succeeded well enough.  So it's a bit of a fair trade... I guess?

Right well, time to see how much sleep I can get.  Or more like how much of my day will be eaten by sleep.

Notes on Progress.

The last couple of months have been rough.  I now have some time to get back on the ernest demon blog project...  Between me and Suizo, we've been trying to figure out a lot of things dealing with company construction and where the blog project will eventually go.  Though it would be nice to think that we could live off of just posting, reality states we need to consider a lot of things before such an exciting adventure can really get off.  And feed us.

That aside, revision of bones for chapter 6 is in place...  A major concern right now is lack of an illustrator... I'm not the greatest artist out there, but I would like to have illustrations for the story character page.  I'm starting to consider sucking it up and drawing them out anyways...

We're approaching the development with small steps and goals we know we can achieve that will lead to improvements and bigger goals later.  The fact that we even got to chapter 5 in relative order still amazes me.  It's messy (well the blog is anyways).  It's bare (definitely needs more work).  And all this deja-vu isn't helping either... But it's being worked on.

Progress is Progress

We shall meet once a year.
When the sky has spilled its pearls.
And there it will rain on that cliff refrain.
The year's suspense cultivated to that moment of bliss.
We will meet once a year. Like this.
Hmm well progress is progress no matter how small it may be.  Hashed out a logo, been working on a manuscript, narrowed down some of the projects...  Got the About me/us pages up for this and the ernest demon blog.  I also went through a few things for college classes and I was informed that I might be able to complete my degree with CLEP's.  I'll be looking into CLEP's and DANTE's that may help me with business ^^;;.

New games are coming out.  Old games still yet to be played.  Books and manga on the pile.  Anime to watch.  The list of things on the side to do are long.
Currently working on the next segment for the ernest demon blog.  Ran a few ideas with the suicidal zombie and we're better understanding where we want to go with the story.  Also working on manuscript... Unlike last year I hope to complete this one soon and send it off...  We'll see what happens.

The weather is getting colder.  It's hard to do wood projects outside so I'm slowing down on those projects x.x  A few interesting movies coming out this month.  Might go out to watch some.  Have any that interest you?
Heh well back to work for me.
Small update complete.

Welcome to the Workshop.

"There is an island of cats somewhere lost to mankind in the desolate sea of dreams, where I am welcomed and treated like their kings." - Wistful Traveler's murmuring.
My wistful mer's aside, thank you for stopping by my workshop.  Right now there's not much here except for an empty cyberspace room, the first post and this cracked mug.  It's a start.
Ah, first let's do introductions.  My name is Daniel *bows, nods and does the digital handshake*.  I can be found on facebook, but for right now I don't have a separate account properly setup and wish to keep the current account narrowed to friends only.  In due time, once this shop is set up properly then all sorts of wonderful web-tools will make this whole experience better.  Why, there will be updates to feed your digital devices.  Information to spend your time on [especially those uneventful lulls in the day].  Things will look nicer, and those page tabs will be filled with something I assure you.
Hmmm... more about me? Well there'll be time for that.
Let's see... This blog is part of a series of projects to come.  It will be filled with short stories and perhaps updates if future web devices like Twitter aren't sufficient for that cause...  For now, construction.
All this, it sounds a bit aimless and directionless, let's try to focus
*fingers to temples*.
Ah.
For now I guess I'll talk about the other blog also under construction... Why multiple blogs Dan? Why?  Fufufu...
Mysterious chuckling and chin cupping aside, this blog is basically my personal page.  It will hold up a list of the projects that I am working on along with access to it.  As for what those projects are?  Well stories.  I am a writer.  I may not have million dollar best seller lists under my name, but we all have to start somewhere.  I have been working on my writing art for several years now.  Though these technologies have been about for quite some time, I have only recently focused my mind towards their use seriously.  There is a simple reason for this.
I had to make my writing worth reading.
Sounds simple enough right?  To be able to make stuff worth reading, one must do much research and practice.  And so here I am.  Finally confident enough in my skills to share with an audience greater in number then the characters in my head.  And there are plenty of those.  Plenty.
Small steps lead to a journey and feet worn; well traveled.  There's plenty of other ways to rewrite and reword such phrases.  The message still finds its use here.
First is the setup of this blog, and another specific blog between me and one of my fellow co-writers and personal friend.  I am not so sure if he wants his normal name out yet, though he's had a blog for a while that sported his name.  For now I'll just call him the Suicidal Zombie.  You can call me Pensmith.  I believe this pen-name is easier to handle then my actual last name.  And what would that be?  Oh you curious reader.  Denied! For now.  Moving on.
The other blog is ernestdemon and you can find it on blogger.  The title for the blog is "The Bleeding Locker and Last Night's Homework."
What's with the long and drawn out name?  Well it has many meanings and like some mystic I'm going to wave my fingers and look into the distance and say, "You will understand, soon."
At the Ernest Demon blog we will be working on a series of short stories.  Consider it like a web novel if you wish.  The goal is to create snippets of literature enjoyment which can be consumed easily by the average reader.  Through this, we will have some form of credentials.  Of sorts.  It's easy to say, "I'm a writer." when you meet people.  But when there's no way to really give proof, because you've been working on a series of manuscripts over the years trying to correct your skills and craft your stories - well.  It's just awkward.
A web novel of sorts.  We will be creating content along with developing the blog and figuring out all the other little web technology tools on our way.  We hope to reach out to others who have an internet presence.  We hope that we won't starve to death as we work on our dreams.  In the mean time, please enjoy what snippets we can give out before the actual 'launch'.  Please be exceptionally patient and earnest, expectant, interested.
Well this little moment of procrastination is over.
Thanks for your time~
Hope that you'll return when things are properly set up.
Our ultimate goal in the end is for our work to be...  A good read.
